When artificial intelligence (AI) first entered the mainstream, it sparked a range of reactions from experts and influential figures across industries. While many were apprehensive, fearing job losses and the automation of human tasks, there was little indication that AI would become a medium for artists to merge technology with creativity in such a profound way. What followed was an unexpected blend of innovation—digital art that both mesmerizes and challenges the viewer’s understanding of technology.

Refik Anadol stands as a prime example of this shift, using AI not just as a tool, but as a transformative force in art. While the wider conversation around AI often revolves around concerns of job replacement, Anadol is using the technology to inspire a new vision—one where AI works alongside humanity to solve some of our most urgent global challenges, such as climate change.

Refik Anadol: Using AI to Shape Art and Experience

A native of Istanbul, Türkiye, Anadol’s journey into AI-driven art began with his deep interest in digital technology and its potential to change how we perceive the world around us. With a background in design, he began experimenting with AI, machine learning, and data visualization, combining these elements with traditional artistic practices to create immersive and evolving experiences that captivate audiences.

In 2014, Anadol founded his creative studio, Refik Anadol Studio, to explore the uncharted possibilities of digital art. By harnessing the power of AI and complex algorithms, he has been able to generate entirely new forms of visual storytelling. For Anadol, the true potential of AI is not just in its ability to produce, but in how it enables us to experience and interpret data—bridging the gap between the physical world and the digital realm. His work, therefore, offers a glimpse into a future where technology and nature exist in harmony.

Looking ahead, Anadol’s upcoming project, DATALAND, set to launch in 2025, promises to take immersive art to new heights. A collaboration with Related Companies, DATALAND will feature a range of art-driven experiences, including Large Nature Model, a groundbreaking AI model derived from nature’s own data. Designed in partnership with Gensler and Arup, the project will delve into the relationship between art, artificial intelligence, and environmental sustainability. This monumental venture follows a series of Anadol’s major exhibitions, including Living Paintings in Los Angeles and Machine Hallucinations at The Sphere in Las Vegas, where his innovative use of AI has already begun transforming corporate events into immersive, interactive experiences.

Echoes of the Earth: Living Archive

Echoes of the Earth marks the Asian debut of Refik Anadol Studio’s groundbreaking Large Nature Model (LNM). Currently showcased at Futura Seoul, located in Korea's prominent museum district, the exhibition challenges the boundaries of generative AI, using it to highlight nature’s inherent intelligence through neural networks, with a focus on rainforest ecosystems.

The exhibit forms part of Anadol’s ongoing body of work aimed at raising awareness of climate change and conservation efforts. By using AI to visualize often-overlooked environmental data—such as temperature variations, air quality shifts, and the sounds of endangered ecosystems—Anadol reimagines these natural phenomena. His work offers viewers a visually stunning, thought-provoking experience, pushing them to reflect on the urgent need to protect the planet’s most vulnerable environments.

One of the standout pieces, Echoes of the Earth, continues to captivate audiences with its immersive installations:

Artificial Realities: Rainforest

Artificial Realities: Rainforest explores the convergence of artificial intelligence and the natural world, with a specific focus on the Amazon rainforest. For this project, Anadol, along with his wife and fellow artist, spent three months living with the Yawanawá, an indigenous tribe deep in the Amazon. Immersed in the heart of the rainforest, they collected data while experiencing the environment firsthand.

Through Artificial Realities: Rainforest, Anadol emphasizes that while AI can generate stunning depictions of the rainforest, true understanding comes from direct engagement with nature itself. He believes that the experience of physically interacting with the environment—the sounds of the animals, the feel of the trees, and the diverse species—provides a deeper connection that AI alone cannot replicate. This piece invites viewers to explore the rainforest’s ecosystem through the lens of AI, while also acknowledging the irreplaceable value of physical presence in nature.

Living Archive: Large Nature Model

At the heart of the exhibition is Living Archive: Large Nature Model, a stunning immersive installation that covers the gallery walls with AI-generated imagery derived from data collected from over 16 rainforest locations. This data, gathered through cutting-edge technologies like LiDAR and photogrammetry, captures the intricate biodiversity of these ecosystems.

LiDAR technology uses laser pulses to create precise 3D mappings of the rainforest, while photogrammetry reconstructs detailed models from photographs. Together, these tools enable the AI to generate vivid, hyper-realistic depictions of the flora, fauna, and fungi within the rainforest.

The Living Archive installation immerses visitors in a digital rainforest archive, emphasizing the delicate balance of these ecosystems and reinforcing the importance of their preservation. By blending art and technology, this piece serves as a powerful reminder of the need to safeguard the natural world.

Artificial Realities: Coral

Another captivating piece by Refik Anadol Studio, Artificial Realities: Coral, was developed as part of Anadol’s long-term research into climate change and coral reef preservation. Unveiled at the World Economic Forum in 2023, this site-specific data sculpture utilizes a massive dataset of 100 million coral images, blending scientific data, technology, and art. The work draws attention to the devastating impact of climate change on coral reefs, highlighting their crucial role in ocean ecosystems.

Through this project, Anadol merges the digital and natural worlds, using data-driven insights to visualize the health of coral reefs. The piece also delves into the potential of emerging technologies such as the Metaverse and blockchain to address climate challenges. Artificial Realities: Coral aims to create AI-driven 3D-printed sculptures that reflect the vibrant, thriving coral ecosystems that could exist if the oceans were in optimal health, offering a powerful symbol of the importance of coral preservation.

The piece invites viewers into a virtual underwater world, while also sparking real-world conversations about sustainability and the urgent need to combat climate change.

Anadol’s Impactful Digital Sculpture at COP29

At COP29, Refik Anadol’s Large Nature Model: Coral showcased his AI-driven data sculptures, blending art with environmental advocacy. First unveiled at the UN Headquarters, the piece uses AI to create evolving abstract patterns in green, orange, and white, derived from millions of coral reef photos. Accompanied by ambient sound, these visuals immerse viewers in a hypnotic experience, highlighting the fragility of coral ecosystems threatened by climate change. The work serves as a powerful call to protect vulnerable ecosystems.
